Franz Pumaren sets to call the shots for GlobalPort

GLOBALPORT will have a new coach when it kicks off its PBA Philippine Cup campaign Friday.

Team consultant Franz Pumaren starts calling the shots for the Batang Pier when they debut against the Mahnidra Floodbusters at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

No less than team owner and current league chairman Mikee Romero broke the news when he announced on social media about Pumaren being formally named as the team's new head coach before they play their first game in the all-Filipino conference.

Former coach Johnedel Cardel will slide down as one of Pumaren's deputies.

Josh Urbiztondo signs with GlobalPort, Karl Dehesa placed on reserved list

GLOBALPORT added depth and experience to its already formidable backcourt by formally signing unrestricted free agent Josh Urbiztondo in time for the Batang Pier’s PBA Philippine Cup game against Barangay Ginebra on Saturday.

SPIN.ph learned Urbiztondo was officially inserted in the team’s regular roster 24 hours before the 6:45 p.m. encounter at the Smart Araneta Coliseum as per league rules.

The Batang Pier relegated Karl Dehesa to the reserve/injury list since adding Urbiztondo meant having a sixth Fil-Am player to their roster. Only five Fil-Ams are allowed on the active roster per team.

Aside from Urbiztondo, other Fil-Ams in Globalport’s lineup are Stanley Pringle, Mike Cortez, Mick Pennisi, and Anthony Semerad.

Terrence Romeo admits he’s ‘back to zero’ after bout with typhoid fever

Tuesday afternoon was an unusual day for GlobalPort’s high-scoring guard Terrence Romeo.

First, he was reporting for practice for the Batang Pier for the first time in a week.

No, the 5-foot-10 former UAAP MVP isn’t coming from an extended vacation. But the sweet-shooting GlobalPort gunner is just coming off a bout with typhoid fever, which forced him to miss the team’s Commissioner’s Cup debut against Alaska over the weekend.

No wonder, Romeo, a gym rat who spends much of his time working on his outside shooting, headed straight to the team’s dugout at the Gatorade Hoops Center, shortly after his first practice with the Batang Pier on Tuesday.

“Back to zero yung stamina ko, tapos yung rhythm ko kinukuha ko pa,” Romeo confided to FOX Sports.

The cat-quick guard said his bout with typhoid fever was due to his penchant for eating street foods.

“Nagdudumi nang madalas tapos hinang hina na ako,” shared the two-time PBA Scoring champion, who was admitted for several days at the FEU-NRMF hospital in Quezon City. “Iwas na muna talaga ako sa street foods.”

Terrence Romeo returns to give GlobalPort a timely boost in Lanao game against Star

GlobalPort gets a shot in the arm as Terrence Romeo is set to make his debut in the team's matchup against Star on Saturday when the PBA Commissioner's Cup goes on the road in Tubod, Lanao del Norte.

After missing the team's conference debut last Saturday due to an undisclosed illness that left him confined in a hospital, Romeo reunites with backcourt partner Stanley Pringle against the Hotshots in the Petron Saturday Special at 5 p.m. at the Mindanao Civic Center gym.

Batang Pier coach Franz Pumaren confirmed his prized ward is set to make his return.

"Yes, he'll play tomorrow, but will try to manage his minutes," Pumaren said in a text message on Friday night.

GlobalPort set to field third import this conference in NBA veteran Justin Harper

GlobalPort is also set to parade a new reinforcement in Justin Harper as the Batang Pier try to revive their flat-lining bid for a playoff spot, taking on postseason-bound Meralco in the first game.

Batang Pier manager Bonnie Tan confirmed the development on the eve of the 4:15 p.m. matchup against the Bolts, making the 27-year-old Harper the team’s third import this conference after Sean Williams and Malcolm White.

The Batang Pier pin their hopes on Harper, an NBA veteran listed at 6’10” and who’s had stints with Orlando, Detroit, and most recently with the Philadelphia 76ers last March when he signed a 10-day contract.

GlobalPort eyes ex-Georgetown U star Jabril Trawick as Govs’ Cup import

GlobalPort eyes NBA D-League veteran and former Georgetown University star Jabril Trawick in the season-ending PBA Governors’ Cup starting next month.

The 6-foot-5 Trawick suited up for the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the NBA D-League that saw him average 13 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 37 games last season.

GlobalPort board governor and AirAsia executive Erick Arejola hopes they will succeed in getting Trawick, who incidentally played with current TNT import Joshua Smith.

“We’re still finalizing the details, only the minor ones,” said Arejola.

In his senior stint with the Hoyas, Trawick averaged 9.1 points with 3.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists.

He also emerged as the team’s top three-point shooter after making 40.7 percent of his shots.

Ryan Araña reunites with college coach Pumaren at Globalport after being waived by KIA

RYAN Araña has found a new, yet familiar home as he suits up for GlobalPort starting in the PBA Governors’ Cup after getting waived by Mahindra.

The 34-year-old wingman out of La Salle reunites with college coach Franz Pumaren as he provides a veteran presence to a young squad led by Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle.

“After nalaman nila na iwe-waive ako ni Mahindra, kinausap ako agad ni boss Erick (Arejola) na interested nga daw si coach Franz na kunin ako, at pumayag naman ako,” Araña said in a short chat with SPIN.ph after the Batang Pier’s tune-up game against Star on Thursday.

“Hindi naman mahirap mag-adjust kasi system ni coach Franz is system namin sa La Salle dati,” he added, although he didn’t play in the 91-84 loss to the Hotshots as he was under the weather.

After spending his first eight seasons at Rain or Shine, Araña was relegated to a journeyman, moving to San Miguel Beer last season, before playing for his second team this season in his 10th year in the league.

Araña, whose contract runs until August 2018, harbors no ill feelings toward Kia.

“Wala naman (ill feelings). Magkakaibigan naman kami nila boss Joe Ramos, sila coach Chris (Gavina), sila boss Eric (Pineda),” he said. “May mga bagay lang talaga na kailangan i-let go, tsaka alam ko gusto nila mga rookies, mas bata.”
