Aldrech Ramos rushed to hospital for suspected broken nose

Star’s sweet-shooting big man Aldrech Ramos was rushed to St. Lukes Hospital in Quezon City after suffering a suspected nose fracture during their Easter Sunday matchup with powerhouse San Miguel.

Ramos unfortunately received a left elbow from Beermen import Charles Rhodes off a loose ball play at the 1:18-mark of the first quarter, forcing him to be guided inside the Hotshots dugout.

It just took a moment before Ramos, who was seen holding his bloodied nose, was accompanied by venue medics and Star PT to the ambulance.

Ramos will be fine, he might not miss any game because he can use a protective mask like Alex Cabagnot last conference.

Aldrech Ramos fitted with protective mask but still doubtful for Star game vs RoS

ADD Aldrech Ramos to the masked men of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

The stretch forward of Star will be wearing a protective mask once he gets the go-signal to play after undergoing operation to repair a fractured nose he suffered during the Hotshots’ 103-97 loss against San Miguel two weeks ago.

The operation kept Ramos out of action in the team’s 96-90 win over Blackwater prior to the All-Star break, and depending on doctor’s clearance, could likewise skip the Hotshots Petron Saturday special game against Rain or Shine in Batangas this weekend.

The big man out of Far Eastern University disclosed to SPIN.ph that he has only gotten his specially-made mask on Tuesday, and rejoined the Hotshots in practice just last Wednesday.

“Healing na lang and unti-unti balik sa conditioning,” he said. “Hopefully, wala nang maging problema. Yung timing and hangin na lang.”

“Hindi pa sure kung palalaruin na ako sa next game against Rain or Shine or sa susunod pa,” he said, referring to Star’s match-up against TnT Katropa on May 10 before the league takes another week-long break to give way to the country’s hosting of the Southeast Asia Basketball Association (Seaba) Championship.

Adrech should play given the circumstances that Star will be playing less two of it's rising Stars in Jio and Maliksi who are both with the Gilas 5.0 for the coming SEABA Tournament.

We're back in the Semis guys! 2 conferences, 2 Semis appearances. Gotta appreciate what coach Chito has done for the franchise. He has completely turned this team around and has proven all his doubters wrong, myself included. But if he's to steer the team to a title, need talagang dumaan at talunin ang sister teams. Ito ngayon ang challenge for our coach.

Star exec says Marqus Blakely still in Hotshots’ radar as Govs’ Cup import

Star team governor Rene Pardo admitted the Hotshots are considering bringing back former PBA Best Import Marqus Blakely in the season-ending Governors Cup.

Blakely played the past 4 seasons in the PBA and was named the Best Import after leading the Purefoods franchise to the 2013 Governors Cup.

The 28-year-old Blakely also helped Star, then known as San Mig win the Governors Cup in 2014 en route to registering the franchise’s first Grand Slam finish. Star became just the fourth team to achieve such feat in league history after the fabled Crispa squad (1976 and 1983), San Miguel (1989) and Alaska (1996).

Blakely actually played for Star in the Governors’ Cup last season, averaging 18.0 points, 17.5 rebounds and 4.5 assist but lasted just 4 games before being replaced by Joel Wright.

Pardo, however, mentioned that Star coach Chito Victolero has two more prospects in their list should plans fail to bring back the former Vermon standout, who just recently played 11 games for Ulsan Mobis Phoebus in the Korean Basketball League.

“Blakely is one of the candidates, pero meron sila coach Chito (Victolero) na 2 or 3 choices. Pero kasama si Blakely sa list nila. Gusto din nila (Star coaching staff) sumubok ng iba kasi may commitment siya (Blakely) sa Korea,” Pardo told FOX Sports on Thursday.

The Star team governor said the 6-foot-4 Blakely is still hoping to get a longer contract with his KBL team.

“Kapag nakatanggap siya (ng contract), eh mas malaki sweldo dun. Saka mahaba ang conference sa KBL, mga 6 to 8 months sa kanila eh dito sa atin mabilis lang, mga 3 months,” he added.

In the latest KBL season, Blakely averaged 18.0 points, 9.8 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.3 steals in 11 games.

Marc Pingris eyes hip recovery under Lakers orthopedic consultant

In an effort to find the right treatment for his nagging hip injury, veteran Star forward Marc Pingris is now undergoing rehab under renowned American orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jason Snibbe and Dr. John Meyer, the lead physical therapist from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

Star physical therapist Nick Ocampo accompanied the 6-4, many-time PBA All-Defensive team member to the U.S. in the hope of helping Pingris recover from the hip injury.

Ocampo said Pingris already had a bruised hip during early this season, which only got worse during the Hotshots’ semifinal series against the Barangay Ginebra Kings in the Philippine Cup.

“We already had 2 sessions and will be doing it four times a week for 4 weeks,” Ocampo shared to FOX Sports on Thursday night. “The gradual conditioning may start if he is pain free doing the rehab and when we see if his hip strength has been established. If he responds well to the rehab, gradual conditioning may be introduced.”

But the good news is, Dr. Snibbe said Pingris’ current hip problem does not require surgery. Ocampo said Dr. Meyer is the same hip therapist who took care of Pingris 7 years ago.

Dr. Snibbe has served as team physician for the University of Southern California since 2003 and currently serves as orthopedic consultant for the LA Lakers, the Sparks and the Scramento Kings.

The American doctor’s short bio states Snibbe performs surgery on the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee, while his practice has special focus on hip preservation and reconstructive surgery.

Pingris missed the Star’s entire Commissioner’s Cup campaign, which ended with the Hotshots 1-3 loss to current Finalist and sister team San Miguel in the semifinals.

Ocampo, a long-time Star physical therapist, explained that the 35-year-old Pingris’ hip injury is caused by the wear and tear of playing in the league for the last 13 seasons.

Known by his moniker “Pinoy Sakuragi”, Pingris managed to play through a painful hip against Ginebra in the All-Filipino conference, before eventually being shut down by team doctors at the start of the Commissioner’s Cup.

“It’s bruised hip, and yes, it’s a wear & tear injury because of the type of game he plays,” shared Ocampo, citing the kind of game Pingris plays in the pro league like diving for loose ball, posting up and banging bodies in the paint with opposing big men.

Star team governor Rene Pardo said Pingris is basically footing the medical bill there in LA, though the former is confident that Star’s veteran big man will recover and be able to rejoin the team in the season-ending conference.

“Nagkaroon siya nung hip injury nung 2010 after naming mag champion (in the Philippine Cup). Ginamot siya nun (Dr. Snibbe) at ngayon, kumuha lang ng timing. So same doctor (from 2010). Mabigat yun,” Pardo explained.

Former Purefoods stars reunite for charity game

CHARITY games in Ormoc, Leyte became the perfect opportunity for the core of the old Purefoods squad to get together for a long-overdue reunion over the weekend.

On the initiative of Rey Evangelista, four-time MVP Alvin Patriminio, Dindo Pumaren, Glenn Capacio and other vanguards of the Purefoods team that won nine championships together during the nineties returned to the court in the popular franchise's old blue and white jerseys.

"Masaya," Evangelista, a former All-Defensive Team mainstay who played all his 14 seasons with Purefoods, said of the game against an Ormoc selection that raised funds for the various socio-civic programs of the Ormoc City Host Lions, of which Evangelista is one of the leaders.

Also joining the team were Nelson Asaytono, who started his career as Patrimonio's back-up at Purefoods before suiting up for Swift and San Miguel; Rodney Santos, Roger Yap, Reuben Dela Rosa, Peter Naron, and man-mountain Bonel Balingit.

Balingit, who suited up for Purefoods briefly in the late stage of his career, came in from Cebu, Naron joined the team from Tagbilaran, Bohol while Dela Rosa made the drive from Capoocan, Leyte where he is now based.

With Blakely unavailable, Star taps hulking Cinmeon Bowers as Govs’ Cup import

After failing to enlist former Best Import Marqus Blakely, Star decided to tap wide-bodied former Auburn Tigers standout Cinmeon Bowers as reinforcement for the season-ending PBA Governors Cup set to start on July 15.

Bowers, who weighs over 250 pounds, could easily give the solid inside presence for a Hotshots side that made back-to-back semifinal finishes this season.

Star team governor Rene Pardo said the athletic Blakely decided to pursue his draft application as an import in the Korean Basketball League, thus deciding to bring in Bowers.

“Si Blakely nag-apply sa (import) draft ng Korea eh. Susubukan daw muna niya dun eh sabi niya, he’s still interested pero later on, so kami, titingnan din muna namin itong bago,” Pardo told FOX Sports on Thursday.

A noted rebounder and inside operator, the 24-year-old Bowers is expected to arrive over the weekend in time for Star’s first practice for the Governors’ Cup next Monday.

Pardo hopes Bowers could be the man for the job, though they are open to change if ever.

“He’s (Blakely) still open (to join Star), if things don’t work out with our current import,” added the amiable Hotshots governor.

Bowers is coming off a 30-game stint with Gallil Elion in the Israeli League where he averaged near double-double of 18.1 points and 8.9 rebounds, along with 2.3 assists.

During his senior year, Bowers averaged 10.5 points and 9.6 rebounds to go with 1.6 assists and 1.0 steal also in 30 games.

He concluded his college career by finishing second in the SEC for the second consecutive season with 9.6 rebounds per game and was second with 7.5 defensive rebounds per game (17th in the NCAA). He also ranked third in the 2015-16 season in the SEC with 14 double-doubles while his career 28 double-doubles in two seasons are the fifth most by an Auburn Tiger.

Victolero Hopes Cinmeon Bowers Is Perfect Fit For Star

STAR coach Chito Victolero is hoping he has found a perfect fit in Cinmeon Bowers as the Hotshots' import for the PBA Governors Cup.

Bowers, fresh from a stint in Israel, is expected to plane in over the weekend and start practices with Star well ahead of the season-ending tourney that starts July 19.

"Sana bagay sa amin, kasi magagaling din ang mga imports ng kalaban," said Victolero, who took his own sweet time before deciding on the 24-year-old former Auburn Tiger.

Listed at 6-foot-7 but expected to easily make the import height limit of 6-5, Bowers is an undersized power forward who has a decent perimeter jumper yet does most of his work inside.

More important for Victolero, Bowers is also a hard-nosed defender that should make him an able match-up for the likes of Barangay Ginebra’s Justin Brownlee, last year’s Best Import awardee Allen Durham of Meralco and Phoenix’s prolific Eugene Phelps.

“We would only know his true game sa actual na laro, but based on the tapes we viewed of him siya 'yung bagay sa system ko," related Victolero. "Mukhang makaka-up-and-down siya and defensively and offensively makakatulong.

“At saka siyempre iyung makaka-match up siya sa imports ng kalaban na alam naman natin naging successful dito sa conference na ito before, like Brownlee, Durham, Phelps.”

Victolero hopes Cinmeon Bowers is perfect fit for Star
